Dear Prospective Candidate,
We would like to invite you to apply to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Science & Technology Center's (STC) Summer Undergraduate Internship Programs. The NSF-STCs offer paid summer internships at most of our seventeen Centers, located at prestigious universities around the United States. These summer internships provide undergraduates an opportunity to conduct research in a graduate school-setting in the following fields: 1) biological sciences, 2) computer and information sciences, 3) engineering, 4) geosciences, and 5) mathematical and physical sciences.
These summer research opportunities are fully-funded and are an excellent way to gain a competitive edge toward graduate school. The Centers are currently accepting applications for the 2010 Summer Programs. Deadlines are rapidly approaching. I encourage those interested in applying to visit the Center website for more information on application processes and deadlines.

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
I want to inform you of some good news from the budget front. The campus has been notified that we will receive a one-time allocation of $1.8 million from additional federal stimulus funding for the principal purpose of supporting added classes. The academic colleges are currently in the process of reducing their Spring schedules in line with our budget and enrollment realities. These new funds will mean that colleges will not need to eliminate as many classes in Spring 2010 due to budget cuts. Also, because the overall intent of the funding is to assist efficient progress to degree, a small portion will be used to ensure adequate academic advising for our students.
This additional funding is wonderful news and will prove helpful in the next semester. Under the current budgetary circumstances, every little bit helps.
F. King Alexander
President

This Friday, October 16, 2009, a couple of representatives of Walt Disney Imagineering will be giving a presentation on the annual ImagiNations Competition, a student competition that challenges student groups of all disciplines to concept and design their best ideas for Disney-style attractions, hotels, restaurants, park lands, or even whole theme parks. The competition is open to undergrads with junior or senior standing, full-time grad students, and recent graduates (within 1 year) but anyone is welcome to attend the meeting. Also, because Walt Disney Imagineering requires such a widely diverse pool of talent, the competition is open to all majors. More details about the competition can be found online at http://disney.go.com/disneycareers/imaginations/.
In addition to discussing the competition, Tony Baxter, a Long Beach alum and designer of such attractions as Thunder Mountain Railroad and Splash Mountain, will be discussing his career as an Imagineer. I have also been asked to talk about my experiences as an applicant to the competition and as a graphic design intern.
The meeting will be held this Friday, October 16th, at 5pm in FA4-307. Whether you're interested in the competition, in hearing what it's like to work for Walt Disney Imagineering, or you just have nothing else better to do on a Friday night, everyone is welcome to attend.
Attached is a flyer with the event details. |

There is currently a position open for Senator for the College of Engineering. Senators represent the College with ASI, so it is important that we have full representation in this important body. Please submit an application if interested. |
